RISE Program testing

Redefining the state of the art

Progress is accelerating for the Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE*) technology demonstration program, with more than 250 tests completed and new research partnerships formed as technologies continue to mature on the way to full-scale Open Fan tests.

CFM RISE program activity is now moving from component-level evaluations to module-level tests.

New propulsion technology features

feature1

ONERA

1:5 scale demo of the Open Fan
Aerodynamics & acoustics up to SMR cruise speed
300+ test hours performed
Including test with Airbus demonstrator plane wing to optimize aircraft integration

feature2

Supercomputing capability

New capability in last 10 years supports faster, improved design iteration
Addresses aerodynamic, acoustic performance
Multiple simulations run on one of world’s fastest supercomputers (Frontier) … awarded additional hours to model aircraft integration
Correlating with wind tunnel test results

feature3

Hybrid electric

Our program objectives integrate multiple electric machines with engine to :
Demonstrate turbofan and electric machine control
Validate performance modeling
Mature and demonstrate up to MW-class, flight-quality electric power components
Mature control logic needed to optimize engine performance
